2. Why did you become a property agent?
I started this journey in real estate, to have flexible working hours, to have the autonomy of doing things my own way, and most importantly, to meet and interact with interesting clients.
3. How did you find the process of becoming a property agent? Was it tough?
I took RES exam in 2019 Feb. All my friends told me that if you don’t pass, then nobody can pass. That only added to my stress level 🙂
I did study for 1 month non-stop, 6 hours a day. And I did not let my friends down. Having the right upline and mentor was crucial for me. I was lucky to have found Young Li, who gave me a lot of guidance at the beginning. He explained every single detail of the process to me, including the pitfalls. I cannot thank him enough.
4. What was the lowest point in your career as a property agent?
Being a property agent means an irregular working schedule and sometimes I have more prospects than I can handle. Sometimes I have no prospect at all. After starting this journey from April 2019, I closed 6 deals before late Sep 2019. Then all of a sudden, my pipeline was dry. That was probably the first time it hit me that this profession requires patience and dedication. Complaining and being negative will not work in your favor at all.
5. How about the highest point?
I had just driven a young couple to collect the keys and visit their new home. On the way back to their rental place, we passed the CBD area. The girl said “I have been studying and working in Singapore since a teenager. All this while I feel that the neon lights and the vibrance of the city has little to do with me. This is the first time I feel that this island is my home and I am no longer an outsider.” The highest points are the special moments I share with clients like this. Not the moments I closed a big deal or I received an award.
6. Any interesting encounters with a client during your career?
I did a deal with the client being outside of Singapore almost the entire time. I prepared PowerPoint presentations and equipped her with the necessary knowledge to make the right decision, all over conference calls.
7. Have you ever met any unreasonable clients? How did you deal with them?
Clients always have their perspective, since property transaction is understandably one of their biggest transactions in life. I would not call anybody unreasonable. What I can do is to stick to facts and show that I do have their interests at heart and have been trying my very best.
8. What lessons have you learnt from being a property agent?
All my clients from different walks of lives have taught me so much about their profession and industry. I also learnt how to deal with different personalities and putting myself in their shoes.
9. If there’s one thing you could tell yourself in the past about being a property agent, what would it be?
10. What are your goals for the future?
Outside of real estate work, I am also a Python instructor at coding schools and institutes, such as SG Code Campus and SMU Academy. I am also an online career coach specializing in consulting industry for junior professional and university graduates. All these different hats share one thing in common with being a real estate agent, which is that I can share my knowledge of how things work in various domains and provide advice to others, be it clients or students or mentee. My true passion lies in sharing and coaching others to live their lives to the fullest. And I will strive to be the best version of myself in doing so.
